An Evening with May Erlewine with special guest Eric O'Daly

Friday, Feb. 07 | 8:00pm ET (7:00pm CT)

FolkSinger-Songwriter

One of the Midwest’s most prolific and passionate songwriters, May continues to share her gift for writing songs of substance that feel both new and soulfully familiar. Her lyrics offer a window into her heartbreak, her empowerment, and her emboldened spirit.

These lyrics, which are really stories crafted through May’s unique experiences, are rooted in wisdom, joy, sorrow, simplicity, and love. Musically, she carries the songwriter’s torch through many genres and sonic landscapes. The delicate arrangements seem to land somewhere between the go-to labels, making it difficult to describe and easier to enjoy.

This concert serves as our next recording partnership activity with 88.1 WVPE Public Radio which will air in a future "The Sauce Live from The Acorn" broadcast on WVPE! We'll be capturing LIVE footage at the show - come get in on the action!

About the Artist

May considers her career in the music industry as a service-oriented one and uses her platform for positive change. She stresses the importance of environmental advocacy, social justice, creative empowerment, and community building as necessary work in our world. May’s body of work has become an anthem and an example of why we need to listen to women, empower women, and why we need to hear their stories.

With a long list of full-length albums and numerous collaborations, May Erlewine’s catalog is proof of her creative power. Her work has been spotlighted by Rolling Stone and NBC’s “The Voice” and covered by countless artists. Erlewine’s last release, “Anyway,” a collaboration with Woody Goss (vulfpeck), showcases her diversity as a singer featuring the newly acclaimed song, “Days Go By.” Her 2017 album, Mother Lion, produced by Tyler Duncan (vulfpeck) and backed by Joe Dart, Theo Katzman, Woody Goss and Joshua Pinkham (Jeremy Kittel), has become an Indie favorite most notably for the empowering single “Never One Thing.”

Among her successes, perhaps her biggest accomplishment is that her music has touched people all over the world. Her words have held solace for weary hearts, offered a light in the darkness, and held a lot of space for the pain and joy of being alive. When she starts to sing, there’s no way around it: welcome in, everyone. The door is wide open.

Waco Brothers w/ The Shams Band

Saturday, Jan. 25 | 8:00pm ET (7:00pm CT)

CountryRock

The Waco Brothers was formed by Jon Langford of the Mekons. The group grew out of Langford’s wish to play more country-influenced music as the Mekons concentrated more on a punk sound. They were originally put together simply for local Chicago shows, but the success of their Bloodshot Records albums allowed them to tour the US occasionally. Some of the members also participated in Langford’s Pine Valley Cosmonauts project.

About the Artists

The Waco Brothers
The band recorded the first of its studio albums in 1995. Their album, Waco Express: Live & Kickin‘ at Schuba’s Tavern is a concert recording which Ken Tucker, the pop music critic for NPR’s Fresh Air and editor-at-large at Entertainment Weekly, described as “country as it should be written and played, with a long memory for roadhouse honky-tonks rather than TV-ready music videos.” Author and music critic Sarah Vowell told the Chicagoist, “I’ve never been able to find a live band in New York as consistently thrilling and funny and fun as the Waco Brothers.“

In 2012, the Waco Brothers collaborated with Nashville mainstay Paul Burch to produce Great Chicago Fire. The Chicago Tribune said of the album, “If the Rolling Stones were still making great records, this would be it.”

The Shams Band
Drawing heavily from their Kinks, Rolling Stones, and Wilco influences, songwriters Donnie Biggins and Paul Gulyas create whiskey-driven blues, complete with four-part harmonies. It's whiskey-driven storytelling. It's a party. It's rock 'n roll with a banjo.

The Electric Cars: A Tribute To The Cars

Friday, Jan. 17 | 8:00pm ET (7:00pm CT)

Rock/Pop

The Electric Cars evoke the magic of The Cars' influential music, bringing the band's artistry in its fullest form to the stage. They ensure that The Cars' legacy as New Wave trailblazers lives on in celebration of an unforgettable era in music history.

“The Cars had it all: the looks, the hooks, beat-romance lyrics, killer choruses, guitar solos that pissed off your parents..." - Brandon Flowers, The Killers

About the Artists

The Electric Cars stand as more than a tribute band – they are agents of an era, bringing the timeless 1980's hits of The Cars to a new generation. With a set that includes classics like "Just What I Needed," "My Best Friend's Girl," and the hit ballad "Drive," they faithfully recreate the magic of The Cars' chart-toppers, taking audiences on a nostalgic journey through the band's greatest hits and deep cuts. New Wave pioneers, The Cars, were the soundtrack of a generation. "The Cars" launched as one of the most successful debuts of all time and stayed on the Billboard charts for 139 weeks, crowning the group Rolling Stone's Best New Artist in 1978. The auspicious guitar and synth sounds in "Moving in Stereo" provided the score to an unforgettable scene in the 1982 classic Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and "You Might Think" delivered MTV's first ever Best Video of the Year in 1984.

Tintype Pop-Up with D. Anson Brody

Sunday, Nov. 24 | 10:00am ET (9:00am CT)

Artphotography

What is a tintype? One of the earliest photographic methods, dating back to the 1850s, a tintype is a direct positive image, exposed through a wet chemical process directly onto a thin piece of metal.

The large format camera and antique lens provides a romantic effect, while the characteristics of the chemical process add artifacts and uniqueness. The finished product is a tangible metal plate with the image composed of the contrast between the black metal, and the highlights made of pure metallic silver.

Appointments begin at 10am ET; taken through 6pm ET. Book your session here.

FAQs

Can my significant other/friend/kids/pets be in the portrait?

Of course, though I’m limiting to two subjects per photo due to lighting limitations, three MAX. If you'd like to do a bigger group we can set that up for another date. Some other things to keep in mind, oftentimes younger children and pets show up blurry due to the very thin focus (depth of field) and sometimes they're really not co-operative with the needs of the process on the day. The flash may also scare pets or young children, though most don't seem to mind much.

How long are the sessions?

It takes a total of 20 min from start to finish. The wetplate process is a lot slower than what we are used to with digital photography, but the results are well worth the time and care.

Can I get my tintype retaken?

We’ll take our time because we only get one take. I can only retake the photo if there is something wrong with the exposure or the chemistry.

Do I get to keep my tintype the day of the session?

No, but I will be developing on site (it’s a cool process, you can watch!) so you’ll get to see it right away. Then I’ll take it with me to the studio, wash, scan and varnish it. You can expect a digital file within 3-5 days of your session and the physical plate within 10-15 days of your session. You can pickup your plate from the Acorn or I can ship your plate directly to your address for $5.

What size will my tintype be?

They are 5x7.

What should I wear?

It’s important to be comfortable and to wear something that you feel represents who you are, but there are certain colors that develop best in portraits. Avoid wearing bright white or all black- in between tones are best. Textures look great! For those wondering about makeup, avoid purples and bright pink or fuchsia lipsticks- unfortunately, these show up white. True reds show up as black so they're to be avoided and if you can use a base makeup without sunblock that will help. Glasses also don’t typically translate correctly. Most times, there’s a lot of glare or they look like sunglasses. You are welcome to wear your glasses but I can’t retake if you don’t like how they turn out. Alternatively, you can pop the lenses out.

Can I dress up?

Absolutely, I do have to work quickly to keep on schedule, so please be photo ready at your appointed time.

Am I standing still for a long time?

Kind of, Most shots only require you to hold perfectly steady for 2-6 seconds. It will be important to stay as still as possible during that time to ensure that your photos don’t develop blurry. I’ll use a flash but I’ll still need you to hold as steady as possible to ensure a crisp photo.

Can I smile?

Yes, I find that a relaxed smile with no teeth is really nice. People in the era this is from didn't smile for photos, that was a trend that came later in the 1920's

What part of me is in the photo?

Waist up, or just head and shoulders. This has to do with the lighting I can bring.

Rock

Celebrate New Year’s Eve with an Acorn favorite, Miles Nielsen & The Rusted Hearts! Miles will take the audience right into 2025 with a countdown at midnight to ring in the New Year!

Join us as we also remember our friend Daniel McMahon.

About the Artists:

Led by free-wheeling frontman Miles Nielsen, The Rusted Hearts have been wowing audiences for years with the diversity of their sound, the tightness of their harmonies, and the quality of their songcraft. Equally comfortable in a compact 3-minute pop song and an epic 10-minute jam, the band has toured incessantly since their inception in 2011, amassing an army of hardcore followers that have dubbed themselves the Rusted Herd. Their new album “OHBAHOY” finds the band venturing into a sphere of Americana that feels both familiar and excitingly new. Tight drums, rich guitar tones, gorgeous woodwinds, and sweeping harmonies provide the perfect complements to Nielsen’s immense storytelling gifts and impeccable vocals. The album’s name comes from an imaginary friend Nielsen had growing up, a fitting reminder as we get older to hold tightly to the noble ideals of freedom and creativity that seem so natural to us as children.
