A celebrated singer and songwriter, Alejandro Escovedo has as eclectic a background and body of work as any rock artist of his generation. As comfortable performing with a string ensemble as he is with an amped-up power trio, and as likely to bare his soul in his lyrics as he is to display some serious rock & roll swagger, Escovedo had already played an important role in punk (with the Nuns), roots rock (the True Believers), and alt-country (Rank & File) before he launched a solo career that's seen him work with everyone from Tony Visconti, John Cale to Bruce Springsteen.

“...One of the genuine lights in rock music.” – Billboard

“Escovedo has blended the lyricism of Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne with the raw power of the Stooges and the Velvet Underground…the result is music with heart, brains, and a burning sense of adventure.” – Mark Kemp, Rolling Stone

“Alejandro Escovedo is one of the great songwriters of our time.” – Time Out Philadelphia

Alejandro Escovedo's New Album Echo Dancing is an Adventure in Life

Few artists define themselves as singularly as singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo. Across decades, his music has been a "fateful agreement with the cosmos"—an ever-evolving journey through punk, cowpunk, and Americana that refuses to stand still.

Rewriting History

On his new album, Echo Dancing, Escovedo takes a road rarely traveled. Rather than a standard retrospective, the album is an experiment in using the past to shape the future. By recording repurposed versions of his own classics, Escovedo effectively rewrites his history.

"I always feel that a well-written song can withstand a lot of abuse," Escovedo says. "Turning a past song inside out leads to discovery of new ideas... The songs never seem to be complete. They are always evolving."

Reimagined tracks like "Bury Me" and "Castañuelas" shed their original skins to reveal an inner flame that hasn't aged. This "revolutionary concept of high beliefs" proves that the past can be reborn as a contemporary entity.

The Italian Sessions

Originally planning an album of new material, Escovedo pivoted just before boarding a plane to Italy to record with Don Antonio and Nicola Peruch.

"My original idea was to record new material, but I thought revisiting songs from various past albums would be more interesting," Escovedo explains. "Recording in a foreign country opens the creative eye. Surprises were a daily occurrence, and we embraced them with exuberance."

The result is a collection that feels absolutely fresh despite its links to the past—a "reincarnation in the recording studio" supported by the expert engineering of Ivano Giovedi.

A Legacy of Exploration

Escovedo’s career has always been a "pirate-like adventure." From the first-wave punk of The Nuns in San Francisco to the "Cowpunk" movement in Austin, he has been a prime architect of modern music. As a founding member of True Believers, he helped build the gateway to the Americana scene before embarking on a thirty-year solo career that earned him No Depression magazine's Artist of the Decade in 1998.

In the 21st century, Escovedo continues to break boundaries. Echo Dancing arrives as a complete exoneration of his belief in the future.

"I’ve never hidden my love for Brian Eno, Roxy Music, and the Stooges, along with Lightnin' Hopkins and Joe Ely," says Escovedo. "There is always more work to be done and joy to be made. I am nowhere near finished."
