The Acorn Center for the Performing Arts transforms into a visual art space with our initiative Art at The Acorn. We are proud to welcome artist Susan Ward Trestrail and her exhibit A Poet's Eye. Describing herself as “a photographer with a poet’s eye,” Susan’s work explores identity, color, and the quiet emotional resilience of women navigating change.

About the Artist
Susan Ward Trestrail, M.F.A., is a photographer, poet, and English professor based in Sleepy Hollow, Illinois. She specializes in fine art photography, with a focus on creative portraiture. Her fine art and nature photography have been featured by the Aurora First Friday Art Initiative and at Limestone Coffee and Tea in the Batavia Public Library.
Susan has three published books. A children's book, Tiny Bird, and two books of poetry paired with her photography, All Earthly Colors and Gather the Days.
Susan grew up in Batavia, Illinois, just two blocks from the beautiful Fox River. Natural beauty, art, literature and film as well as her father and mother, both writers, artists, and free thinkers, continue to inspire her creative vision.
Artist Statement
I am a photographer with a poet’s eye.
My fine art photography explores identity, color, and the quiet emotional resilience of women navigating change. Through portraiture and close observation, I use facial expression, emotion, texture, atmosphere, and composition to transform ordinary subjects into images that reflect the layered realities women navigate today.
Movement is central to my work. My images glide, twirl, and lift with the emotional energy of my subjects, revealing the intricate beauty found in gesture, expression, and transformation.
Through my work, I invite viewers to slow down, look closely, and consider the emotional depth beneath outward beauty.
The Acorn is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
