Legendary American roots rock band BoDeans are marking an extraordinary milestone in 2026: 40 years of music, touring, and songwriting that have shaped the landscape of heartland rock and Americana. To celebrate, the band has launched a nationwide anniversary tour, “40 Years of Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams… and Good Things,” bringing decades of iconic songs, deep cuts, and fan favorites to audiences across the country.
Formed in Waukesha, Wisconsin in the early 1980s, BoDeans have built a four-decade legacy defined by timeless songwriting and a distinctive guitar-driven sound led by founding member, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Kurt Neumann. From their Midwestern beginnings, the band has grown into a nationally recognized force whose music continues to resonate across generations.
“It’s a great feeling to play music for people who want to hear it and sing along,” says Neumann. “These days, it often brings them back to memories of their youth, and that’s what makes them happy.”
The 2026 anniversary tour will span the band’s extensive catalog, revisiting cornerstone tracks such as “Good Things,” “Idaho,” and the enduring 1993 hit “Closer to Free,” alongside deeper cuts and select new material, offering a look at what’s next for the band. The tour underscores BoDeans’ reputation as a dynamic live act, known for emotionally-charged performances that continue to connect deeply with audiences nationwide.
BoDeans’ career includes sharing stages with some of music’s most iconic artists, including U2, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Tom Petty, The Pretenders, and David Bowie. Their influence extends beyond the stage, with more than 70 television placements, as well as recognition in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Midwest Artists exhibit.
Their breakthrough came with the 1986 debut Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams, produced by T Bone Burnett, which established the band’s signature sound and earned critical acclaim. Subsequent releases such as Go Slow Down and Blend further cemented their place in the American musical canon, while “Closer to Free” became a cultural touchstone as the theme song for FOX’s Party of Five.
Across 40 years and more than a dozen studio albums, BoDeans have maintained a balance of radio-ready hooks and deeply personal storytelling. Their most recent album, 4 The Last Time (2022), written and recorded by Neumann in Austin, TX, reflects both the band’s roots-driven energy and a modern perspective on life, love, and resilience.
Live performance remains central to the band’s identity. “Performing live is really important. It’s about living in the moment,” Neumann says. “It’s imperfect and electric… and I think that’s exactly why people are drawn to live shows. The audience is everything.”
As BoDeans continue to embark on their 40th anniversary tour, they affirm their place as one of America’s most enduring and beloved live rock bands — still evolving, still performing, and still connecting with audiences across the country.
“I’m amazed that I’ve been able to keep it going for this long,” Neumann reflects. “And that people still show up and sing these songs with us when we come to town. It’s really a great gift.”
